Location & History
Ton Duc Thang Museum is one of the few museums that offers free admission for all visitors.
Named after Uncle Ton Duc Thang, a historical figure that played a crucial role in the decolonisation of Vietnam, this museum is the only museum in Vietnam to display exhibitions about one single individual exclusively. Despite being less popular than other touristy museums such as the War Remnants Museum or the Museum of Vietnamese History, Ton Duc Thang Museum is a worth-visiting museum for those interested in digging deep in Vietnam’s effort to decolonise itself and escape the rule of the French.

What To See
The main topic of the museum is the life and career of Uncle Ton Duc Thang. The museum has a total number of five permanent sections, in addition to a short-term exhibition. The first section displays more than 50 gifts for Uncle Ton presented by Ho Chi Minh Museum on the 37th anniversary of Uncle Ton’s death.
To find out about Uncle Ton’s role in the south of Vietnam, it is necessary to visit the exhibition “Uncle Ton with the south of Vietnam”, which displays Uncle Ton’s contributions to the Vietnam Communist Party’s revolution and decolonisation.
Uncle Ton was contained by the French and sent to Con Dao prison, which was notorious for being extremely cruel, as he spent 15 years of life there. One can learn more about this period of his life by visiting the exhibition room “15 years of Con Dao prison”.
Last but not least, there is a huge room dedicated to worshiping Uncle Ton, which is also the venue where the annual death anniversary of Vietnam’s second president takes place.

The museum is just down from Ham Nghi or Nguyen Hue Street, about 1km from Dragon Wharf House and 500m to Saigon Square Shopping Center. It’s most convenient to stop here for a while during visitor’s walking city tour.
